At BSL Sign Unite, we believe learning British Sign Language should be supportive, friendly, and inspiring. Our Level 1 Award is the perfect place to begin – whether you’re learning to connect with Deaf friends or family, for work, or simply to open your world.
This full qualification is made up of three engaging units, taught online by patient, experienced tutors who understand what it’s like to be a beginner. You’ll learn in small groups, build confidence every step of the way, and join a community that grows with you.
BSL101 – Introduction to BSL
Begin with the basics – how to greet people, count, talk about travel and the weather, and follow simple directions. This module sets the foundation for your journey and is assessed internally before being confirmed by Signature (the national awarding body).
BSL102 – Conversational BSL
Time to start chatting! You’ll build confidence in everyday conversations – describing people, animals, and objects, sharing your interests, and talking about food and drink.
BSL103 – Everyday Life in BSL
Now it’s real-world time – give and follow directions, describe places, talk about work and education, and exchange useful everyday information.
Each unit includes around 20–22 guided learning hours, with extra practice in your own time, adding up to around 90 hours total.
